“Comfort of the Throat” is the debut collection by the project-based textile collaboration FALSE KIN, founded in 2013 by Nina Born and Siff Pristed. The oriental collection is based on a research trip to Istanbul, Turkey, to investigate the clash of modern culture and unique textile heritage.
FALSE KIN takes great pride in an in-house manufactured process as well as untraditional showcasing of their work. Hence, the “Comfort of the Throat” collection was presented at a pop-up event in April 2014 as a constructed setting inspired by the many enchanting bazaars of Istanbul.
Margrethe Odgaard has further interpreted the knitted “tongues” into 2D patterns – printed on wood and used as serving plates at the event.
The inspiration has been drawn from the Inuit mythology, exploring how spiritualism intend to be closely connected to physical objects; in particular in the form of occult artefacts such as evil ‘Tupilaqs’ and protective Amulets.
Based on the traditional physical elements that these objects were made from, a curiosity archive of textiles has been developed as well as a performance video which seeks to evoke the spiritual narrative aspects of the costumes through movements, lighting and music.

Nina Born works conceptually with a narrative approach to developing textiles,
inspired by the legacy of native cultures. By creating performance costumes she strives
to enhance the properties of her textiles through bodily movements
- experimenting with how they can be visualized through media
such as film and photography.
Nina has a strong passion for developing unconventional and experimenting textiles
inspired by traditional textiles heritage. She specialises in a wide range of textile disciplines,
both analogue and digital, such as knit, print, embroidery and fabric manipulation.
